This project actually began as a sculpture that would mechanically move other sculptures made by me. In this case the cocktail stick bird in the image. Now the sculpture has evolved the way it has i have contemplated leaving out the additions, this i feel would completely change its meaning.
I had realised i wasn’t optimising the wheels i had used. They had more potential attached to each other so i have done just that. Doing this will create more openings to attach other wheels to.
After really liking the velocity of the cotton reel in comparison to the rest of the larger wheels i am going to add more or even create something separate. I’ve had to add rubber bands to the insides to enable friction between the string and rubber to enable them to turn efficiently. I’m going to keep this as a side project and see where i can take it.
The cotton reel interacts well with entire piece, as predicted it spins a lot faster than the larger wheels. The smaller wheel is very interactive with the rest of the piece and makes an interesting sound when at high speeds
After trying to think of what i can use for a smaller wheel and being kindly given some cotton reels i was able to start adding smaller components, which i think will spin a lot more quickly.
I think it is necessary to have a different range of wheel sizes and this would make the piece more exciting to watch and look at.
