Viewing single post of blog To The Light

Hello everyone… its nice to be back to blogging with you all. I haven’t been blogging for over a year now. I had blogged about Being Part of Something, which started out as a journey from joining an artist studio, to running an artist led space and then going on to set up my own artist led organisation www.ZeitgeistArtsProjects.com with Annabel Tilley, whom found me via a-n. I have always found blogging on a-n a fantastic way to explore my work, have critical discussions and support from other artists and Annabel and I promote it endlessly to other artists here.

It seems a timely moment to begin talking about my work again. I have a significant solo show opening at BruceCastleMuseum in just under a month.

To the Light is an exhibition that takes as its starting point, the powerful depictions of the destruction of the 2011 Riots which spread from London to Manchester.

and the work I have created over the last year has moved on significantly in its development. This platform is a very good way to explore some of the more complex aspects and meanings of this body of work as well as the unfolding of the shows wider meanings, insight and context as it opens and develops. It has been quite a journey to get to here, in many ways. Here is a reminder of when I finished the first in this series of works

The original name for this exhibition of these series of works was ‘Halfway Through the Dark’ a bleak place before the dawn, between the nights violence and the mornings reparation. It represented a journey that has also been a very personal one. Through the emergence of this work and my own development the name of the series became about something that spoke of hope. ‘To the Light’, is an ideological and philosophical position about survival and creation. Illuminating the darkest moments with light and hope. (heres a bit of the press release and a super cool website is being built for the show which I shall tell you all about another time…)

To the Light Exhibition

August 15th – 14th November 2013

‘..There’s a note of the elegiac here – a contemplative sadness for a past and absent moment of violence – but also hope, beauty and a sensitivity[1]Tom Jeffreys, Wild Culture

Rosalind Davis’s mixed media works address the possibility of the transformation and reparation of space, through the act of creativity. The resulting body of work is delicate yet dynamic paintings, depicting an unfolding and complex set of possibilities of both physical and psychological spaces, moving from representational spaces to more complex abstracted landscapes; less about the literal spaces and physical spaces yet alluding them. These resultant spaces she paints are sensitive and complex, at once tense and serene with a fragile sense of stability; ‘ The environments she represents are but support structures, as the artist envisions the identities and the human experiences that animate the edifices; their spatial compression and otherwordliness, their conceptual meshings are mended and/or supported through stitching, as well as being somewhat transformed when their painted surfaces melt into, soak and stain the backdrop.’ Becky Hunter

Using a range of surfaces; paint, photography, drawing, vinyl adhesive and embroidery Davis creates paradoxical visionary landscapes and structures. Interior and exterior space are both suggested and physicalised through a process of emergent materialisation.
