Back to the projector idea with the zoetrope for inspiration. I had attempted to finish making the structure with the materials that I had previously used. When putting this together there was the problem of the metal being too flimsy, meaning that the chain would fall off each time. here are some pictures attached of how far I got with it.
I have created another device with the help from a friend that runs alot smoother, this will be written about in due time when I get the images for it.
What have I been up to today?
Aside from spending most of the day editing a catalogue with 2 other people, I had decided to have a second attempt at a layered stencil after the first one (the acrylic one) ended so badly.
In total I decided to make 5 different colours, However the black had two stencils as it had different details which could not be all included in just one stencil. Despite hating the outcome of this stencil as it does not have much detail, the wrong spray paint has been used and the colours are not the ideal ones that I would want to use, I feel that I have learnt abit more today and this weekend as I was cutting them out. I have managed to add a little more detail which I had done before, but this is still something I am desperate to achieve, getting a better quality stencil. I think I can achieve this in the future by having better spray paints, more shades of grey meaning that I can make more stencils which add a gradient to the work instead of different block greys which stand out really obviously.
I would also spray when there is less wind as this really frustrated me today and I was left with a blurry image and not a neat line, something which also annoys me. In the future I should spend more time on cutting more detail into the stencil so that the outcome will be better. I should have done it this time but I was too eager to try out the stencil that I rushed parts of it. I had a good feeling when I did the second stencil that it would look good in the end but when I got to the 4th stencil, the detail in the arms and face I realised that this would not be something which I would like.
At the end I decided to try and add some yellow detail on the neck of the dress, however the yellow did not sit well on the black, so I sprayed alot of yellow on without thinking which then just left a yellow mark that was bleeding down the image, I had to spray this black again, but there are now marks of yellow left on the picture.
After doing this print I decided to spray the background white, however I ran out of white spray half way though the first one, so decided to spray the background for the second one black.
Next time I need to be more patient, and beter still, more prepared!
This had not worked as well as I hoped, it has not left me in the best of moods
As I said I would before, I now have the time to write about my projector idea, at the moment it has come to a standstill while I do otherwork but this is something I want to finish soon.
Attached as the first image is a picture of a zoetrope which is what I have based this design around. I wanted to create something which an audience could interact with while also testing out trying to create an animated drawing using stills. A zoetrope came to mind with this so I have gone with the idea. I have also looked into other methods similar to this however they are all alot more complicated to make in comparrison to this design.
I cut a bike to get parts to make this projector style piece. In the second picture attached is what i have craeted using a wooden circle which I attached a gear to in the middle. this gear will turn one way and allow the wheel to spin in one direction untill it slowly comes to a stop.
since this image and creating this I had realised using an actual bike wheel would have been alot easier and smoother, so I have scrapped the wooden circle and used a bike wheel. I have attached a chain to this and seen how far it would go untill I had to attach the handle to turn the wheel. The handle had a problem of being too close to the wheel and so I have had to add another gear in the middle connected to two chains, one going to the wheel and another going to the handle which turns the wheel. These three, the gear the wheel and the handle will all be connected to a large sheet of metal which will be used as the surface, the table which it all sits on.
As seen on the zoetrope, there is a paper circle with images on, I plan on putting my images of which I have not yet created onto a clear material, perspex or acetate, something along those lines. The reasoning behid this is because I want there to be a place where you can attach your lantern into the projector and it will create the light source. The plan is that the light will travel in one direction, with the images being moved fast enough infront of the light that it will create a moving animation on the wall in a dark and flickering style, resembling that of an early projector style.
I had a tutorial a week ago and it was suggested that I tried making my heads out of wax as they were meant to look like candles. I have since attempted this but the downside to this is that it is harder to see the detail of the faces within the candle.
Because of this I now am going to stick to using plaster for the limbs so that it can also give the effect of the diseased body parts that the angels have left behind while also being used as candles. I will also plan on making other limbs to be scattered around the place, whether I can lay these in the compost and wood that will be on the floor out of the way or all over the place i have not yet decided.
however I have not fully excluded the use of wax as I want to drip wax down onto the heads to give the impression that it is a real candle, as I cannot use a flame and can only give off the hint that it is suppost to be candle like.
Given that I am sticking to the original plan, I have not added any pictures as I do not currently have one handy which shows off the wax candle, I shall post this later if I remember, so instead here is a video of me making the heads into candle holders:
A quick write up for what I got up to yesterday. I intended to create more work, finish some more clocks and do as much as I could steam through as I was ready to get down into making as much as possible, instead I spent hours with afew other people editing a front cover of a magazine, which took alot of time away from what I originally wanted to do, however this is what I have managed to do yesterday and the day before.
Two days ago I created the head candles, as seen in a previous post. I had also designed two more of the clock faces, this being the faces for the a person being affected by harmfull and painfull sores. This is of a person who has sores over their arm and face, with the hair covering the rest of the person. The second clock I designed was the face for the angel who dried up the great river euphrates and allowed a passage for the kings from the east. This is a dried up river with a palace at the east side to represent this part of the narrative. I have only got as far as engraving a little detail and intend to burn and paint and create more detail on this in the future, when I will also show pictures on here of how it went.
Yesterday I decided to create a mould for the head candles, I have carved out where the candle would be, and then created a mould from this as it will save time and effort in the future as I wont need to carve out the hole many times in the future. Attached I have put up a picture of the head in the middle of being cast, with the first layer of vinyl rubber on top of it.
The other thing I created yesterday was parts of the 3rd angel statues which will be placed around the room in the degree show. This piece I intend to sit on the projector which I plan on making and will post images of soon. This piece will sit on the projector so that when the viewer goes to activate the projector they will see this little angel staring at them, and I plan on painting its face with what would appear to be blood dripping down with the intended effect to shock or un-nerve the audience. Also I want to keep the feeling of always being watched while in the room.
I used the angel which i had created before from the first mould and cut each limb off. I then sanded them into different angles where they connect and repieced them together. The two images attached show what the final outcome of this is, however I will need to add plaster to fill in the gaps and make the sculpture abit more smoother. I still also need to make wings and add them onto the sculpture, but this has always proven to be the easiest part and should take less than an hour to do anyway.
