Blog Post about a few I artists have looked during this project. *

Starting with Damien Hirst, who featured prominately in my dissertation and also has been a prominant artist in my work.

Well known for his shark piece The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991) Hirst uses caged environments to house his animals within. Filling his steel cages with formaldehyde solution, Hirst is able to preserve his animal specimens. Hirst’s animal works have always fascinated me. With my current project the cases he uses in his works create an almost painterly boundary like a frame or edge of a canvas and the animal is housed within the confines of its enclosure – a dead zoo almost.

Hirst has always interested me for his unusual way of displaying of his animals and his butterfly room. But, it wasnt until last summer (2012) when I visited the Damien Hirst Tater show that I became a really big fan of his work. There I was able to really appreciate his work.
As an art student I have read quite a bit about Damien Hirst from the YBAs to the recent exhibition – and have read a lot about how viewers are shocked by shark and how the work impacted on them, and when I chose to put Hirst in my dissertation (as my central artist) I was worried that when I went to the exhibition the work wouldnt have this impact on me but I was wrong it did, the size, scale and slight ickyness (if thats a word) of the sharks and other animals was exactly as the books read and probably more because I had read up on him. (I may have rambled abit there …)

Anyway I think that Hirst has influenced my work in a fair few ways … some I know of but I’m sure there are some influences that I have picked up on yet, heres 2 I can tink of now :

1. he uses animals in his work – as do I (ok I don’t use dead animals I refer to animals BUT it could happen at some stage)

2. the encasing of not just animals but also other objects – my caged birds, deer in a frame (which I thought was on here but it isnt – will put a pic up) and my overrall “theme” of cage.

Cornelia Parker‘s The maybe (1995) is another piece that fed into some of my earlier ideas within this project. Here, Parker collaboroated with Tilda Swinton, an actress, who took part in th piece as a sleeping figure, again like with Hirst’s animal works, in the confines of a case. Swinton lay asleep within the casing where viewers can see her but cannot touch her – almost as if she is an exhibit in a zoo where passers by are observing her asleep – almost as if they were observing a sleeping lion.

Like Parker I want to create an environment and idea for a performance piece that will take place in my cage – be this during the degree show, a pre recorded piece, or during the Private View.

Last artist for this post is Tehching Hsieh.

I just happened to come across him by chance whilst doing a quick random internet search. His particular performance piece Cage 1978-1979 saw him inhabiting within a caged area of his studio. Hsieh lived in the confines of the enclosure he built. he was looked after by one person who fed him and made sure he was alive. this work fascinated me because its almost as if he himself enclosed himself away from the world and became an animal – just as animals are dependent on their keepers to stay alive he was almost dependent on the one man.

New design ….

So this is post is about my newest design idea. The space was made up of a 5 walled structure that will make up the enclosure. Windows on the right hand wall and bottom wall will be the only way that the viewer can see into the space.

With an earlier design, I had been playing with the idea of having an inside and outside area for the “animals” to interact with – the idea was to create an inside area with a sleeping, eating and toilet area and then have an “outdoor” area for the “animals” to exercise in (this idea was created when I wanted to have the viewer participate).

The idea of inside/outside areas has become more relevant to my ideas again, and seeing as viewers wouldn’t be participating I have started to think about re-thinking the outdoor area. This time using video and a projector.

The first image is of painting of a graph paper design I did Monday … showing the video projection part on the left wall.*

The second image is of a graph paper drawing I did to try and get the ratios of my space sorted out – although I need to get measuring and working out sizes.

The third image is a close up of the first

* POST UPDATE – could using projectors make my ideas truley fake ? Could they become soft and not as hard hitting to the viewer as I hope to achieve?

Video projector idea gone for the time being

A lot of my works – be it in painting, photography, sketches, sculptures and also installations – involve animals in some way or some form. This current project that I am working on is no different … an animal theme features strongly in the work and following on from the projects I was doing last year a zoo theme also features prominently at the forefront driving the project ever forward to the degree show.

With my current designs I have been looking at creating an odd shaped 5 sided enclosure that will house humans as if they were in a zoo. All designs have taken the structural elements that are already in place … the walls … into account as well as the size of the space and the lighting around that area of the studios (windows etc)

Attached to this post are two images … the first is of some rough sketchbook sketches that include the rough layout of my part of the studio (bottom) and some of the window designs (top) that I have been playing around with.

Initially with my ideas I wanted the viewer to have two experiences … the 1st being inside the enclosure structure where they would participate for a set time in the installation work and become their inner animal. The 2nd experience was to be a viewer to the piece – to be outside the space and look upon the installation enclosure as if they were at the zoo.

After a tutorial last week this idea has been gone. My tutor got my thinking about what viewers do when they go to the zoo … they view the animals – they don’t go in the exhibits (ok this is not entirely true … some exhibits are open so you can wander with the animals BUT I dare you to try and walk with a lion or a tiger … I doubt you will come tell me about your experience). So because of this tutorial I have decided to completely close off the space and keep it locked and secure so no one can go in.

By doing this and having another lengthy chat with my boyfriend about what to do … I had more ideas (my poor head) and this is what I have been working on this week … see next post.

The second image is of two more rough designs that are in my sketchbook. The top right image is of a slightly wonky design of the 5 walled structure I am wanting to create, whilst the second, bottom left, is a bit more of an accurate design. The window for the viewers to look through will be on right hand wall and the bottom wall, this will hopefully mean that they viewer will be able to see all aspects of the space.

I have spent this week mainly at home working on my sketch book and trying to get my head around some more ideas … feels like every time I open my sketchbook and go to write one thing about a thousand more ideas come flooding through … which is not at all helpful this close to the degree show … so instead of talking these through with friends and tutors I’ve kept myself to myself got rid of the useless ideas and kept about 2.

Because I have been going through my sketchbook and finishing bits off and adding stuff from the easter holidays I am even more clearer on my ideas now than I was at the start of the week … so today I’m going to work through my sketchbook and post the ideas on here – add some images – and then when I get back in the studio properly next week I should have a clearer head and be able to tackle anything …

With this post, I have added a photo of my sketchbook … yayyy … four different layered papers, tissue paper, sticky back paper I think it’s finally right … now some people may say I have spent too long considering my front cover … seeing as it’s the ideas inside that’s important … but I like all my pages to tie in – including the front cover and the animal print definitely does that.

(Apologise for quality of images … have lost one camera and the spare sd card so am hoping my phone camera is good)

London Trip

Bank Holiday Monday in London was surprisingly not that busy – it was a bit cold and the underground was a bit mad (in my eyes) anyway but all in all an enjoyable day by both my boyfriend and myself.

Anyway – my recent trip was mainly to have a look round the Natural History Museums Extinction: not the end of the World? exhibition. We were wandering around the exhibition for at least an hour on our own – so I got to have a really good look each piece and have a read up.

The trip has informed my work immensely and now when I’m sketching I’m thinking about this aspect of animal/human life and how we (humans) have effected our wildlife and planet, but I’m also constantly aware that I could become bogged down with this and make my piece into something else … a few questions that I am having to ask myself are:
– Was it a good idea to go? and
– Should I have waited or gone earlier?

So although this post is kind of short about my visit I have kept it short on purpose because I have all this information and not sure what to do with it yet … it needs to be included but I don’t want it to completely drive and over take the work …
