A colleague of mine told me when I first suggested about the fetishism chair that he had some real,PVC material that i could have.
it arrived today. I really like it. its such a tactile material its smooth and shiny but your hand sticks to it if you pull across it.
In the picture it looks rippled, however once its pulled tight it becomes flawless.
This video shows a snippet of Marie Chouinard’s piece, bODY_rEMIX/ gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS.
The “Canadian choreographer whose work is known for its sexually voyeuristic content. Early performance events saw her urinating and masturbating on stage and auctioning herself off for the night to audience members.”
The performance piece bODY_rEMIX, to me is a highly sexual and suggestive piece. The dancers are all nude, save for, nipple cups, swaddle cloth-like under wear and S&M harnesses and usually enhanced with a crutch or two.
Crutches are used as phallic replacements. One section where a man on crutches, with a crutch affixed to his groin walks up to a clothes rack and proceeds to slap the crutch off the top. This to me suggests intercourse.
The performance is a surreal one. The soundtrack of cannibalized Bach only adds to this surrealism, as does the blatant fetishism.
The relevance I feel to my work again is the use of metaphors for genitalia and intercourse.

A small piece of bODY_rEMIX/ gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS by Marie Chouinard
These images show a chair currently under construction upon the theme of fetish. Taking Allen Jone’s furniture girls as a focus this chair will be gloss black, the seat will have a hole in it so the vice will protrude out – suggesting fetishism clothing. I will try and take the harshness out of the chair by rounding off the corners. The seat back and bottom will be covered in the slick pvc fabric of fetishist clothing.
Obviously with the making of penis comes the obvious jokes, homosexual quips etc. It seems that in modern society this is the done thing, to make penises mean you are obsessed with or must be gay and you’re futile efforts to encourage people otherwise only confirm your homosexuality. Oh well small minds. I would be lying to say I have not been guilty of similar offences, but this being an art environment you expect a bit more…
It’s led me to question my making of these and the REAL reason but all I come back to is the original symbolism of man. I think their life-likeness will only add to the reaction when they are crushed.
The picture shows a small stack of my finished penises from a shoot for the degree show catalogue.
Final images of “The Throne” or “Leech”. These are to be the images that will be in the degree show catalogue. I like the starkness of the image, it looks so brutal with the relic of the phallus underneath it in the second image. as this is the space in which they will displayed I’m very happy with the way that the images came out.
