Through speaking and talking about my work a few people have said to me that my work is sexist I hadn’t really thought of it in this way. I’m just creating a personal response this got me thinking which, in turn led me to look at the definition:
Sexism is prejudice or discrimination based on a person’s sex. Sexist attitudes may stem from traditional stereotypes of gender roles, and may include the belief that a person of one sex is intrinsically superior to a person of the other. A job applicant may face discriminatory hiring practices, or (if hired) receive unequal compensation or treatment compared to that of their opposite-sex peers. Extreme sexism may foster sexual harassment, rape and other forms of sexual violence.
i could try to argue that my work is not sexist or prejudice in anyway. However the fact of the matter is that it is heavily prejudice. It offers my view on women and my view alone. However this is my view from experience. i know that to tar one and all with the same brush is somewhat unfair, however men are branded the same, this doesn’t make it right for me to do it but I’d quite like to put my view across. Men can be snared and trapped and hurt equally as much as women can by men. It is i feel better to recognize that my work is deeply sexist than to try and say otherwise, as this would be foolish.
Penis Production-
I felt the rate that these were being produced and with the failure rate being every other cast id even the odds and make two more molds, so these have been vulcanized and will be going into production tomorrow. This means 4 penises per cast upping production 100%. – Sounds like a business proposal or growth calculation. Oh the irony.
Attached is an image of penises thus far.
Just a quick post showing the progression of the piece ‘leech’ the frame of the chair has been painted in chrome the arms in gold and I’ve mounted the vice i also have some crushed red velvet on order for the backrest. The only downside to this piece is the paint I’m using to paint it. Although the finish is superb, it marks as soon as you touch it with any pressure at all. I found that lacquer couldn’t be used as a layer of protection as it dulls the finish of the paint. This is bothering me at the moment I need to get the chair somewhere safe once its all finished, hopefully within next week all being well.
Am I being too precious?
Had a recent tutorial with my tutor on 15/03/13. just wanted to air my thoughts on a few of the points bought up. firstly was her personal reaction to my work.
“I wanted to hug you and say not all of us are like that.”
Now i found this interesting. Because today in modern culture its pretty much, from what ive seen a given that the common view of men is that we are all shophenistic pricks who inevitably think with theyre dicks.
but i also see this burgeoning clique of girls who seem to feel that freeing themselves is offering themselves up to anyone whos willing.
now i know i dont have the strongest morals in the world but this tit for tat, to me seems to be getting out of control as if the male and female of the speicies seem to be having a game of one upmanship. but as i siad this is a view i take from personal experience, owing to having to younger sisters and the culture they’re growing up in disgusts me a little.
Now i could go on but ive come to an impromptu conclusion that maybe this one upmanship could be a result of the misgony suffered by women for centuries. but to continue in this fashion would surely bring upon them a totally different view of misgony.
i would welcome anyones view on this matter.
Secondly was the brutality of the sculptures and if this was the aim or if i should conceal it. But these sculptures being a point on how i largely view my experience of women i wanted the shock to be immediate. however i would like to take the initial edge off them. I discussed the possiblity of having images of adonesses above these traps to act as a distraction initially, hinting at the attraction intially snaring the hapless victim. (me)
Penis’s.
Getting a reputation around the building of being the penis man, but this to me is a necessary side track to purvey my feelings through these sculptures and add my view of the myth.
upon a chat with a colleague it was suggested that the viewer may have a more personal response if the phallic shape put into the trap was a more realistic penis.
Today I have modelled a new penis out of clay and cast it in the rubber mould to be able to create hollow slip casts of it.
In this post you’ll see penis’s MK1 and MK11.
Creating a slip cast of a penis is very labour intesive. it involves taping the two halves of the rubber mould together. pouring plaster in 3 times while making sure it covers every inch of the mould then on the final plaster pour the holes are blocked up and the plaster left in to block these up. The plaster is then left to dry. once dry carefully pull apart the mould and reveal a penis inside. this is proving to be a very testing and but rewarding process and im learning the technique to get perfect penis’s.
