We had an exhibition at the beginning of February for all second years. There was some really amazing work! It was so interesting to see what every one has done so far as don’t always find the time to look round all the studios.
My project was based on my dreams, here is the Artist’s Statement that went alongside it:
I dreamt that I threw a cheese grater at a passer by. This was an unusual dream that bewildered me and I had no explanation for, so I decided to explore it. Could there be a reason behind me subconsciously creating this act of random assault?
To look into this, I developed images from shadows created through a cheese grater, these formed the two main objects that have dominated my studio practice: sausage-like shapes and a cloud. These unusual images together reinforce the obscure feeling of dreams; it is unclear why they are there, engaging the viewer in questioning what they mean. As I began to experiment with these two source images, my focus moved from depicting the dream to creating a dream-like atmosphere from the images that had emerged from it.
Even though it’s still a mystery why I threw that cheese grater, the images that I got from the process took my painting to a level that it hasn’t been before; I found new insights into the journey of a painting.
