‘Grounded’

Having played with the idea of creating some 3D pieces, I reviewed my work and realised that at this stage I just need to concentrate on making drawings. This all seems too sensible but as a result I have given my project a working title of ‘Grounded”

My line of enquiry developed from two drawings about my movements within my own home on a single day. I started to keep a written diary about my use of space around the ground floor of my house and made drawings based on the diary.

This week I installed 7 of these drawings in the university exhibition cabinets. The work is more engaging when shown as a group – 28 drawings could be interesting?

My intention is to develop a conceptual body of work that both investigates the drawing process and alludes to routines, structures , boundaries and space.

Its just six weeks until I need work for my Degree Show.

No pressure then!

The Cedric Ford Art Prize Exhibition moves to Nottingham’s Backlit Gallery tomorrow. It will be interesting to see the work in a different space.

I’m going to the private view – a chance to network. Backlit Gallery has studio space, organises workshops and is involved in community outreach. So I’m also hoping for a chance to explore.

This week I have concentrated on making ‘structures’ that relate to my movement drawings. I began by folding two drawings to create cube shapes. When I displayed them for our group crit the comments focussed on the spontaneous nature of my drawings compared to the control required to make a paper cube. I was asked about the rationale for my work and realised that I didn’t know. Not a good response in a crit session.

However I have tried to think through my ideas and realised that my current interest is purely in moving the work from 2D to 3D. Today I’ve experimented by creating some more 3D forms but made them in a more haphazard and spontaneous way. I intend to continue with this line of enquiry although I don’t know where its going.

I’ve also started to explore the idea of making drawings based on gps mapping – maybe another red herring?
