This popular event provides an opportunity for our five artist-presenters to brush up on their presentation skills, as well as a chance for Sussex artists to get to know each other better and explore the breadth and diversity of artistic practice in the region. The five artists will each talk for five minutes and show 15 images of, or relating to their work in these short and snappy Pecha Kucha style presentations.
The talks will be followed by time for discussion, chat and a glass of wine.
Our five presenting artists are:
MANDY WAX is a UK based artist working predominantly with collage, printmaking and stitch. She is inspired by psychoanalytic and psychosocial themes and usually works around a conceptual framework or idea. Recurring themes for her are pain, sorrow, loss and desire. Mandy has exhibited widely since 2010 – her work is in both private and NHS collections. In 2017 she curated an exhibition on gender identity in London coinciding with a conference held at the Freud Museum.
Mandy is currently working on ideas around symbol and narrative – trying to answer questions about how imagery assists or even alters the narratives we use about our lives. www.mandywax.com
SUSAN HAMER is an artist who works mainly on a small, intimate scale. At the heart of her work is an enquiry into the act of seeing. “I am interested in how a painting can fix our attention, evoke memory and reveal things we wouldn’t otherwise see.” Influenced by filmic imagery, she uses many of the techniques found in photography and cinema, such as close-up and cropping to create a more fragmented composition. Since graduating from Central St Martins in 1988, Susan Hamer has exhibited with galleries including the Royal Academy of Art, Albermarle Gallery and the Towner Gallery. www.susanhamer.co.uk
JUNE NELSON is from Wales, coming to Sussex via Scotland after a career in publishing. She later studied Fine Art (Painting) at the University of Brighton. She has just completed a 6-week stint in the Project Space at Phoenix, Brighton, working on paintings and sculptures loosely based on The Odyssey. She is interested in elusive narratives, surfaces, and edges, from mirrors to maps. Despite insisting she is a painter, she finds different methods (both 2D and 3D) to suit different ideas — from paint, wax, graphite powder or soot; to plaster, video, and text. She has been shortlisted for the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2018 with ‘Smoke I’ – part of a series of small drawings made with candle soot, which involves a delicate balance between control and intuition. www.junenelson.co.uk
CLARE DALES is a designer and artist. She derives inspiration from built and natural forms and explores pattern and scale in her graphic work. Working mainly in lino and monoprint, drypoint etching and collage, Clare’s work often encompasses several media in one piece. Clare’s practice also includes teaching and installations around the themes of analogue communications. Having written and illustrated Eastbourne An Alphabet – A Journey In Print, she is now working on her next project; a project along the South Coast combining flaneuse, history and multi media presentation.
HUGH DUNFORD WOOD is a painter and printmaker; he also designs textiles, crockery, jewelry, neon and wallpapers and has worked with many national & international designers. He has worked as Artist-in-Residence with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Globe Theatre in London, the Museum of Bermuda Art and the Church of England in Fulham and has over 40 years’ experience of arts in health and community settings. Hugh co-founded the first Open Studio Weeks in Britain in 1983, in Oxfordshire, the Lyme Regis ArtsFest in 2003, and curated the pop-up National Gallery of Lyme Regis for 10 years as well as setting up Dorset’s Little Art Films, showing international contemporary artists work. He is a member of The Devon Guild of Craftsmen, Chelsea Arts Club, Royal Western Academy, and Visiting Tutor at West Dean College. His work is in the collections of The Victoria & Albert Museum, the British Council, The Bodleian Library and various Oxford Colleges.
