Our contemporary moment of precarity calls for a progressive response that resists the pull of anger and despair. Inspired by Rebecca Solnit’s words, our aim is to create a propositional space with breathing room for alternative ways of thinking, expressing, and being:
Hope locates itself in the premise that we don’t know what
will happen, and in the spaciousness of uncertainty, there is
room to act.” (Solnit, Hope in the Dark)
A Gathering of Unasked Possibility is an exhibition and series of events by artists, researchers, and activists who interrogate these issues through their practices. In addition to sharing the work of visual artists, there will be daily programming that activates the gallery through talks, film screenings, panel discussions, workshops, a candlelight vigil for hope, meditation, an activist skill-swap, and more. Our hope is to foster a heartfelt exchange of ideas, to inspire new ways of thinking, and to support our agency as creatives and citizens.
Judith Rodgers and Kelly M O’Brien are collaborating on this project. Judith is an artist-curator with a focus on environmental and feminist issues and is completing her MA, Curatorial Practice degree early next year at Bath Spa University. Kelly is a mixed media sculptor and recent graduate of the Master of Fine Art program at Bath Spa, where her research focused on precariousness and resilience.
