In 1976 I became the proud owner of a Liverpool football strip, complete with trainers from Woolworth’s own brand (Winfield) in clashing orange and black. My allegiance to Liverpool was borne out of their success and popularity of the period. So began a long standing fascination with the world of football that has been a constant point of reference in my life. I have however always felt on the periphery of this national obsession called football, borne out of my gender, geography and growing up without any particular strong family allegiance to it. Working with the Hereford Bulls Project as part of the Hereford Photography Festival has been an opportunity to revisit this attachment; exploring archival material that reveals such strong local ties to a community and core values of commitment, devotion, passion and pride through the medium of photography.
