These six steel figures by renowned artist Sokari Douglas Camp CBE are here at St Paul’s to commemorate the abolition of slavery and the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr preaching at the cathedral. The work hopes, in the words of the artist,‘to show that the people of slave heritage are brave and have dignity andstrength’ and invites the viewers ‘to salute the survivors who have contributed to the lives we all lead today’.

The work is comprised of six life-sized steel figures in a line representing successive stages of the slavery story. The line starts with a figure clad in indigenous robes. Then two figures representing trans-Atlantic slave labour: a plantation worker with amachete and a domestic serving woman. These are followed by three figures representing the post-liberation era: a Sierra Leonean woman in 19th century Creole dress, a man in a 20th century executive suit and finally another relaxing in casual trousers and a T-shirt. A small maquette placed nearby has the figures with strip shadows behind each figure and containing a phrase referring to the stage in the story represented by the figure.
