Hannah Murgatroyd’s paintings depict women in midlife – white-haired, painterly presences standing with quiet strength. These are not idealised figures, but those shaped by experience and painted with fierce tenderness. Born in the tight windows between caring for a young child, the works feel urgent, intimate, and defiantly alive. For Murgatroyd, painting isn’t a choice but a necessity – a way to rebuild both body and self. Her raw, beautiful brushwork carries weight and wit. These are paintings that look inward, then outward – unflinching and luminous.
