Are we there yet? Mapping the Labyrinth
In this recent series of work, Michelle Rumney has been attempting to make some virtual journeys. Not instantly, online through Google, but using paper maps to travel to places she’s never been before, unfolding every inch of the journey then piecing it together literally mile by mile.
Using labyrinth patterns and repetitive grids as a framework, this deliberately slow process allows her to explore places that have been visited many times before in other ways, weaving new roads and pathways, and finding patterns and echoes of the past along the way.
With the same approach, she also navigates her way through books and stories. The instructions and directions for achieving success in the self-help books are threaded through the labyrinth pathways. The pages are laid out all at once, key phrases and sentences are exposed, but also contained within her frameworks, prompting new readings and journeys through these bestsellers.
The artworks here ask the viewer simply to take another look, to stop asking ‘Are we there yet?’ and instead to slow down, to allow the senses time to tune in and most of all, to enjoy exploring them.
