In his latest show ‘Ars Automata’ Mark explores themes of loneliness and disconnection in the digital age. Inspired by the concept of organic and technological integration, the show will attempt to provoke conversations about the potential consequences, both negative and positive, of a possible future orientation, in which the line between the artificial and the natural is being blurred. Mark uses painting, sculpture and film to explore theses nuanced issues.
“Have laptops, tablets and smart phones made life easier? Or have they overlaid an increasingly intricate and unpredictable meta-reality on top of the already knotty complications of our material and social worlds. Being sucked inside the screen and the metaverse is to become disassociated from the physical and interpersonal realities we were evolved to engage with. Then there is the compromise of augmented reality that promises an enhanced engagement with the physical world. But we have watched Black Mirror and seen how bionic eyes and brain chips can be hacked. Why make life more complicated? To create addiction and make money obviously. To live forever, impossibly.” – Graham Coulter-Smith
