ArtCan is pleased to present ‘Sanctuary’ the inaugural exhibition organised by the ArtCan East Anglia group in the town of Cambridge.

Members of ArtCan East Anglia won a bursary to bring art by women from around East Anglia to the sanctuary of the Leper Chapel. The Leper Chapel is a magnificent 12th century Romanesque building and is one of the oldest complete surviving buildings in Cambridge. The chapel, which is not usually open to the public provides the backdrop for the work of 12 women artists who worked together to create a show that incorporates painting, photography, sculpture, mixed media and drawing.

ArtCan East Anglia
The ArtCan East Anglia group is one of the first pilot regional groups set up in 2023 to bring together ArtCan artists located in the East of England, with the purpose of networking, share their artistic practices and be ArtCan enthusiastic ambassadors. ArtCan East’s artists come from Cambridge, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex. They have been collaborating since January. As individuals they have exhibited widely in regional, national, and international exhibitions. Some are full time artists while others dovetail their art making into busy lives. As a result, members bring different levels of experience and expertise to the group, all of which is celebrated. They look forward to sharing their practices with art lovers in East Anglia with the launch of this exhibition.

About The Women In Art
The Women in Art Painter Prize, formerly The Holly Bush Painting prize awarded two £500 bursaries earlier this year. Sue Ecclestone awarded one bursary to ArtCan East for their inaugural exhibition in East Anglia. The main prize is in its sixth year and is open for submissions now. The Women In Art Prize is part of a broader project with “Women In Art” to assist and celebrate women artists. It focuses on the careers of emerging female painters and photographers. The prize will be moving into other mediums as they recognise other women artists want to be involved.
