Art Lab May 2024: Helen Jones

Helen works from her studio in Dean Clough, Halifax and came to painting late in life having spent 40 years working as a nurse. She specialised in palliative care, which heightened her appreciation of nature and the precarity of life. Integral to translating her experiences, emotions and thoughts about the natural environment onto canvas, is the joy of experimenting with paint and colour.
“The work is purposeful and exhilarating in terms of connection with the natural blueprint of our surroundings. The areas we often dismiss and disregard and leave to the industry: quarries. There’s a subliminal effect when we are immersed in the work and I want to know where I have seen this, there is a familiarity which makes them quite comforting but also confrontational because some of them are industrial and imposing. There is certainly a sense of exploration whether it be through painting processes, travels on and through land or transcendental experience of colour and texture. There’s a sense of somewhere almost forgotten and you have allowed us to remember where this place is…..”

Helen’s debut solo exhibition Delving Deeply: An exploration of what lies beneath through the medium of paint is currently in the Mosaic and Upstairs Galleries Dean Clough, Halifax HX3 5AX. Open daily 10-4pm.
There will be a visit to the exhibition prior to Helen’s presentation.
