Presenting: The Yaffingale
Ali Pickard trained in Metal Art in Edinburgh, where she spent many years as part of a Women’s Welding Collective.
Now based in North Wales she works with craft techniques within fine-art sculptures, and combines welding and embroidery, woodwork and textile art. Her work is intricate and time-consuming. Telling stories, creating characters, and making things move. She’s interested in history and modernity, which stories get to be told, and who is telling the tale, both within fiction and society.
Her artist’s name is The Yaffingale, which is an archaic name for the green woodpecker.
