Eastbourne Redoubt is part of a string of early 19th century defences consisting of three circular fortresses and 74 Martello Towers along the stretch of coast from Seaford to Folkestone. They were built to defend the south coast from the threat of Napoleonic invasion. This month’s Blue Monkey event focuses on artist-led projects which make use of unusual spaces. Blue Monkey artists Judith Alder and Clare Whistler will be chatting about the pros and cons of artist-led projects taking place outside traditional arts environments. Both Alder and Whistler have a broad experience of artist-led projects in a range of settings and locations including their current exhibition, The Visitor, on display at Eastbourne Redoubt until 13 May. The Visitor exhibition shows work from their recent collaboration in which they have visited and worked in four historic locations including Eastbourne Redoubt and Great Dixter. They will be joined by Redoubt Curator, Fran Stovold who will talk about her experience of working with artists. All welcome. Doors open at 5.30pm to provide an opportunity to look round the exhibition and museum before talk starts at about 6.15pm. FREE to Blue Monkey Network members. Non members £5 – proceeds to Eastbourne Redoubt.
