Avionics [ey-vee-on-iks, av-ee-]: [avi(ation) + (electr)onics.] / [avi(an) + (s)onics.] As suspicious of nomenclature as she is fascinated by systems of classification and categorisation, Edden has chosen this word in order to corrupt it. Its usual meaning – the affiliation between aviation and electronics – hints at but cannot fully capture her explorations. Edden’s avionics is the use of sound and imagery to investigate our surroundings and the freedom of flight and is therefore also of the sonic and avian variety. Jane Edden situates her work at the intersection of science and aesthetics: a hybrid space where technological concerns meet the seductiveness of natural imagery.
