Artists Esther Jervis and Cathy Hart are proposing to spend two weeks in the House Gallery working within their figurative sculptural practices to create 'guests' for a banquet. They will bring in old, discarded pieces to re-make alongside new unfinished sculptures; using collaborative processes to achieve a fresh outcome. The materials they plan to work with include plaster, wire, fabric and wadding. The gallery environment will be transformed by these 'other worldly' characters who appear to be outside our experience yet imbued with human qualities. Over the course of the two weeks the artists will develop the work, building on each other’s interventions and documenting the changes as metamorphosis takes place. Photos will be scattered on the floor to show the working process. Both artists reference myths and fairytales, creating awkward looking creatures with ambiguous features that can be both vulnerable and menacing. The playful nature of their sculptures invite the viewer to imagine and create interpretations of their own. There is an informal viewing on Saturday 6th September, 11 – 4 giving select viewers an opportunity to see them at work. At the end of the fortnight is a more publicised private view on Thursday 11th September, 7 – 9pm, so that guests can view the finished sculptures.
