Ben Jenner: In Conversation

Jenner’s work is greatly inspired by asemic writing, which in itself is rooted in abstract expressionism. Asemic writing is defined as being a body of calligraphic marks that contain no semantic content, they resemble the written word but are in fact abstractions.

This exhibition was intended to be hosted at The Vestibules in Bristol, however due to social distancing measures you are invited instead to experience the work in a virtual space. Digital exhibitions have become commonplace since the government enforced lockdown which asks us to consider what amounts to a gallery space.

The word ‘space’ carries connotations of a three dimensional physical place, but has been adopted by many internet-related phrases such as cyber space, web space and address space, to name just three. Why not add gallery space to the non-exhaustive list? Who knows what the future holds in terms of social distancing, this could perhaps be the future of visiting galleries and museums.
