As artist-in-residence in Biosciences at the University of Kent, I am exploring the imaging potential of the spaces and activities there, and generating artwork in collaboration with the research scientists and technical staff. As a former scientist, it’s a brilliant project for me. This exhibition features pinhole photographs I’ve exposed in various zones in the department. Looking for suitable containers, I was offered large reagent water barrels, ideal for converting into pinhole cameras. Successful exposures have now been made in the scientists’ spaces: research labs, teaching labs, prep rooms, the lecture theatre. Just a tiny hole in a square of aluminium at the front of the barrel allows light to form a good image on the photographic paper fixed inside. The long exposure times (up to eight hours), and the curved surface of the picture plane, yield unique readings of the subjects, capturing subtle evidence of activity.
