Blackhorse Lane Studios has been a part of the vibrant art scene of Walthamstow for ten years. This workspace for artists is managed by the Barbican Arts Group Trust (BAGT) who have been active in the arts since 1972. A wide variety of contemporary art is practised in the studios including: painting, sculpture, printmaking, installation, ceramics, glass, animation, photography and performance. The 27 artists have an impressive history of achievements including winners of Jerwood Prizes, the Max Mara Prize, those shortlisted for the John Moores Painting Prize and many other art prizes. Their educational backgrounds include the Royal College of Art, Camberwell College of Art, Turps Banana Painting School and other major art colleges.
Two days when artists open their studios to the public, the Open Studios is your chance to meet the artists in their work environments, get insights into how and what they create, and even take home a work of art. Engage in one of the most exciting aspects of contemporary art by discussing art with the artists themselves. Stop by and enjoy, be inspired and perhaps challenged at this friendly, relaxed event.
It is also a good opportunity to purchase original works at pre-gallery prices! Visitors will have the chance to bid on an artwork by a Blackhorse Lane artist in the Silent Auction. Part of the proceeds from the auction are donated by the artists to Barbican Arts Group Trust’s Public Programme. You can see the artworks in the auction in advance by going to the BAGT website.
The BAGT artists’ diverse practices include both contemporary and traditional styles. The studio artists include a sculptor using recycled materials, painters with a variety of styles and subject matter, a maker of beautiful works created from large scale paper cuts that relate to the female form that also appear on ceramic vases, an artist that uses glass to make interactive works, a maker of life-sized animals made of wire, a video animation artist, a contemporary painter making large-scale paintings on silk, an artist making screenprints of sausage dogs and paintings of Indian cows using pigments brought back from the country, as well as artists with conceptual and performance-based practices and others.
The artists include Charlotte Hodes winner of the Jerwood Drawing Prize, Sandie Sutton who has permanently placed commissioned sculptures in London parks and Helen Maurer winner of the Jerwood Prize for Glass. Other achievements of the artists include a number that have been short listed for the Jerwood Drawing and Sculpture Prizes and the Max Mara Prize, commissions for British Telecom, British airways, and the Bank of England, a winner of a Millennium Award and many more too numerous to list. This year Emma Talbot and Matthew Krishanu have been selected for the John Moores Painting Prize.
