Jang-Oh Hong explores the multiple manifestations of light as both a conceptual tool and physical phenomenon. In Blackout ,Hong experiments on what happens to art-objects when they become ‘overexposed’ by creating a reverse-method of lighting: a process of lighting which results in the disappearance of the art-object. Traditionally, light has symbolized spiritual awakenings, transcendental experiences, and a positivist framework for Renaissance-rationality and liberty. However, Hong is also interested in the ability of light to distort its target or blind the spectator. In Blackout, Hong projects light onto his drawings and generates destructive interference where light blurs his drawings’ colours and shapes. Through the reversed relationship between light and object, Hong hopes to encourage gallery visitors to rethink notions of conventional perception and contemporary en-lightenment.
