Bobby Baker is one of the most widely acclaimed and popular performance artists working today. During her residency this summer she and sculptor Charlie Whittuck researched and developed a new show due to première at ICIA in 2011 before touring nationally. Based on Bobby’s experiences of recovery from serious physical and mental ill health, Mad Gyms and Kitchens investigates the benefits of exercise and nutrition in the pursuit of ultimate physical and mental wellbeing. Bobby will perform a series of hilarious and informative ‘demonstrations’ on fantastical equipment, designed by Charlie to assist Bobby in her quest for perfect health. Including drawings and models, this intriguing multi-media exhibition will display the artists’ processes.Bobby’s research was informed by discussions with the University’s Department of Psychology and the Department of Sports Development and Recreation. Bobby Baker trained as a painter at St Martins School of Art, but, on leaving, found cake and performance more effective ways to express her ideas. In a career spanning 35 years she has celebrated food, shopping, motherhood and the larger questions of daily life, touring extensively. In 2009 The Wellcome Collection exhibited 158 of Bobby’s remarkable Diary Drawings recording her 11 year journey from mental and physical illness to eventual recovery.
