I have always had a strong sense that it has been my place within my family and my early life experiences that would give me a better explanation of my inability to cope at certain times of my life. The exploration of these concerns remains at the core of my artistic practice. We are living in times when people in the eye of the media can talk openly about their bipolar diagnosis, but there is still a general lack of empathy, especially for artists. In attending a mental health group I was surprised to discover how many service users were educated in the arts. My experience was of cutting out butterflies from wrapping paper to stick on card for the society to sell as greeting cards in hospitals and day centres. It seemed like such a waste of our potential vision and creativity. My research subject is art, education and therapy for women with debilitating core beliefs. I have my own personal experiences to draw from and aim to develop a therapeutic programme in the future, particularly for other woman artists. My personal supposition is that art is not therapeutic when you are working through issues on your own, it can be destabilising when not contained. Art can only be therapeutic and remedial with the understanding and support of others.
