Artist Richard Bartle will be exhibiting new paintings inspired by a rural residency in the heart of Lincolnshire. Brick & Stone, Iron & Bronze will be exhibited 1st June to 30th June 2024 at the National Trust, Richmond Lodge at Tattershall Castle, Lincolnshire.
Following a 2-month artist residency in the historic farming community of Wood Enderby, a short trip from Tattershall Castle, Sheffield-based artist Bartle, with permissions from landowners, and using a metal detector, has been digging through the layers of earth, exposing evidence of local ancestors. From surface rocks and rubble to buried items of iron farming equipment, unearthing a Tudor gilded silver fastener, a beautiful bronze Roman strap loop and coin and copper artefacts. Bartle has been inspired to create a series of new paintings from the story’s of constant occupancy, migration emerging about the land, and the notion of Britishness as a melting pot of cultures and stories.
Bartles Brick & Stone, Iron & Bronze residency and exhibition is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. This artwork celebrates the Lincolnshire landscape and explores a rich historical narrative that forms our identity.
Richard said “My work is about the joy of painting through its use of shape, texture, and colour, about becoming immersed in a place, be it Cornwall, Lincolnshire or Istanbul, it is about being active in the landscape, but mostly about searching out stories in the hope that I might better understand my own position within the world and gain a better sense of my own belonging.”
Rupert Ibbotson, National Trust, Senior Visitor Experience Officer said “As the largest conservation charity in Europe, our responsibility includes preserving and advocating for our heritage and ancestry for future generations. Embracing contemporary art as a means to explore and share our heritage is a new endeavour for us at Tattershall Castle and we are thrilled to be supporting Richard by hosting the exhibition ‘Brick & Stone, Iron & Bronze’ at our historic site. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors and sharing this unique experience”.
