With ‘The World Was All Before Them’ Charlie Calder-Potts presents a solo exhibition of miniature paintings that fuse ancient craft and contemporary photography.
Charlie Calder-Potts is concerned with cultures and traditions overshadowed by conflict and politics, her practice informed by artist residencies in Afghanistan, Syria, Iran and Iraq. In 2021 the artist defied the pandemic to join miniature painter and art instructor Heraa Khan in Pakistan.
Applying a unique process that begins with the meticulous preparation of paint base and pigments and the fabrication of fine brushes from squirrel hair, the resulting body of 30 works celebrates ancient Indo-Persian mastery with the largest measuring a mere 21 inches. By reversing gender roles and by inserting present-day characters into historical ceremonial and hunting scenes, Charlie Calder-Potts presents a thoughtful piece of cultural reportage.
‘The World Was All Before Them’ is the artist’s fourth solo exhibition with Fosse Gallery, one of the UK’s most important contemporary galleries outside London.
