‘Collected is a delightful display of desirable artworks by ten Durham Interface artists within this refurbished alms-house en route to Durham Cathedral. Now a world Heritage Visitor Centre it provides an overview of what Durham has to offer and is a free facility open every day 9.30 am – 4.30pm.
Participating artists, Carolyn Corfield, Ray Etchells, Julia Forster, Maggie Hickman Smith, Lindsay Madden, Meryl Mathieson, Wendy Parkin, Hugh Penney, Maria Polos and Joan Ward work in a wide range of disciplines.
Carolyn Corfield, a mixed media sculptor specializing in ceramics and member of the Northern Potters Association, has work held in private and municipal collections worldwide. A trio of her Goddess pieces feature (see image) referencing Neolithic ritual figurines that functioned to express nature – ‘The Great Mystery’. Well known for her compelling figurative sculpture, variously described as “elemental and linked to myth”, her tactile deities in burnished smoke fired crank seemingly unearthed from a dig, serve to evoke a connection with the past.
A visit will not disappoint as both venue and exhibition are gems.
