In this exhibition, Karen explores the different colours of the sea in different places and at different times. From the dramatic grey and black of Norway and the west coast of Ireland to the beautiful turquoise sea around the Greek islands, or the green coast of the south coast of England.
She creates abstract sculptures in porcelain paperclay, using varying mixtures of pure white combined with coloured clay created using various oxides and stains. Each piece starts life on a potter’s wheel and is then then abstracted while damp to capture the feeling of movement and portray the energy and action at the coast. After biscuit firing each piece is then carefully sanded by hand before a final high firing to 1250 degrees.
The exhibition runs from 15th January to 20th February 2022 in The Mirror Gallery at South Hill Park Arts Centre, Bracknell, Berkshire.
