‘Common Ground’ brings together new works from the winners of the General Office long running, lockdown interrupted Open Exhibition 2020/21. Midland based artists Gerald Rushton, Shaun Morris and Andrew Smith were voted the artists who the judges deemed had presented work that took risks in both the choice of subject and the creative methods of observing and exploring them. GO is very excited to bring these three artists together and experience their recent investigations through painting, drawing, film and poetry.
Common to each artist is the role of place and its enduring nature. Through night and day, beyond the passage of people, politics and climate how do buildings and spaces remain? How do we interact with them and how have we reinvented our relation to them over these past few years of intense living?
These artists gaze upon their immediate surroundings of the Midlands; the lived and unlived spaces of our urban corridors, strips of between-lands and corners of town and home, haunted by both the impact and absence of the living. Each draws out a new layer of meaning through carefully intersected materials – working painting out of photography, memory through remembered material, mindscapes out of landscapes.
The exhibition opens on Saturday 18th September with a PV from 6-10pm please book on a 1 hour slot through the eventbrite link below.
The exhibition will run to Sunday 10th October Wed-Sun 11-4pm.
