Holland uses film, photography and audio to create a set of installation works which aim to enhance a sense of place for those who live either side of the Humber by focusing on some of the areas’ defining characteristics. The work examines how closely rooted and formed by place we are, and how place and identity aid our sense of ‘belonging somewhere’.
Histories and memories are rooted within a particular place; these are layered and become the psychological sediment, defining our view of place. Holland’s new work is a contemplation and visualisation of this psycho-geographic sense of place. These areas evidence transience, liminality, migration, places and lives lived here, defined by, or lost to the water. Recognition of place enables this deep and dynamic rooting; if you live for long in an area, then the area inevitably begins to live within you.
