Malcolm Martin and Gaynor Dowling, Dail Behennah, Wycliffe Stutchbury, Anthony Roussel, Sarah Thirlwell. Coppice examines the work of contemporary artists and makers who reveal, through their diverse, innovative and experimental approaches, the intrinsic beauty of wood. Dail Behennah’s abstract, geometric, grid-like forms play with light and shadow, creating atmospheric work on a large scale, whereas compositions in found and forgotten timber by Wycliffe Stutchbury reveal wood’s unfashioned beauty and vulnerability, whilst respecting its origin. Sculptural still life compositions created by Malcolm Martin and Gaynor Dowling present bounding contours and shallow relief, which invite associations between land and body. The Craft Case, which presents a diverse programme of high quality, contemporary applied arts, will be showing wearable sculpture by award-winning designer Anthony Roussel, from layered and compressed plywood inspired by the epic sweep of the British coastline, while perceptions of traditional woodturning are challenged through imaginative reinvention and the use of recycled materials by Sarah Thirwell. Free family workshop. Join Sarah Thirwell on Saturday, 30 January, 1- 3.30pm at Rochester Art Gallery and Craft Case.Taking inspiration from the exhibition Coppice, participants will explore line, shape, colour and texture through a variety of materials and mediums including printing, charcoal drawing and collage using recycled materials.
