Crescendo
The highest point reached in a progressive increase of intensity.
In a critical moment in time, there is a sense that we have entered a stage of transition after reaching a peak of progress. But within the chaos lie the seeds of transformation. Smith’s work energises the viewer with a magnificent crescendo of possibilities.
Smith says, “I want to live in a world which excites and inspires, a world of courage and prosperity, a world where positive, colourful, contemporary new art is held in the highest respect, driving the imagination of a new generation.” Great art should be socially, emotionally and culturally liberating, dynamic and exciting, whilst visually and distinctively appealing. This exhibition, like much of Smith’s work, epitomizes this dream.
They say music gives form to silence. Similarly, in Smith’s paintings, the painted, often pure white background creates a space from which the imagery can arise. There is a rhythm and symmetry tied in with the apparent chaotic nature in the work. Almost synaesthetically, counterpoint, timbre and melody can be heard while viewing the paintings, in the contrasts of colour, hue and tone.
