Place-making is a shorthand term for the practice of creating, maintaining or enhancing a location’s identity and sense of place. The multi-faceted approach to planning, design and management of public spaces which draws on existing cultural and physical resources to create an ecology that promote people’s health, happiness and wellbeing offers a fertile ground for artists whose work is concerned with social change and community action.
Contributions from artists specialising in place-making and socially engaged practice; Jean McEwan, Steve Pool & Kate Genever www.poly-technic.co.uk, and Rachel Howfield-Massey. Led by Susan Jones, visual arts consultant, researcher and adviser who currently writes for The Guardian and Arts Professional.
