Winners of One Church Street Gallery’s juried open submission, Photosensitive 2011, collaborate to create this compelling and ambiguously named exhibition, DOL. Combining oldest and newest forms of photography to present two strongly feminine perspectives, both artists use the playful and enigmatic to engage with darker themes.Rachel Thomson’s unique, beautiful and mysterious cyanotype photograms of found street objects, rubbish and plants, combine with graphic symbols to explore themes of anxiety about mass-production and over-consumption; these are are underlaid with a craving for spiritual certainty. A cheap, natural method of reproduction, using only paper, water and sunlight, presents an alternative to technologies which cost the earth.Through often playful portraiture and self-portraiture, Alix Marie’s exquisitely lit photographs explore the understanding, depiction and transgression of femininity. Animals and body parts, both real and ceramic, find their way into her photographs and an uneasy, unsettling mood often pervades the work, which currently pursues enquiry about femininity and the body and the relationship between femininity and animality. Born in Paris, Alix Marie studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and currently lives and works in Manchester. Rachel Thomson studied Photography & Print Media at Central St Martins School of Art and works as an artist and producer of independent magazine ‘Imbroglio’.
