Doublethink is a concept that the artist has adopted to explore her viewpoint and knowledge of the break up and subsequent divorce of her parents. The phrase – coined by George Orwell in his book 1984 – describes the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously and accepting both of them.’Recently I found a series of large black and white prints that my father – a professional photographer – had taken of my mother and infant brother in the 1960s during their short marriage. The prints seem to elucidate an interesting area of my parents’ relationship; a more dynamic time, an experimental phase they both participated in, my mother as muse and my father as photographer.
