“Down to earth” Solo art exhibition Wendy Havelock’s current work forms an expressive and intuitive response to the landscapes she loves, particularly those of the North Yorkshire Moors and Coast where she lives. Pattern, light, texture and colour combined with experience and memory, evoke the atmosphere and vibrancy of the rich, natural world. These experiences and memories are not just personal, but those ingrained by time on the land itself, its history written under its skin. Working primarily in acrylic, she pours and drips paint on to the canvas, always trying to hold the balance between combining the excitement of chance happenings with deliberate mark making. The most potent results are often the unexpected ones. Havelock’s aim is to convey a sense of place and of a moment in time, a feeling for individual experience in ever-changing yet timeless environments. Janilaine Mainprize

My art is an outcome of learning from and translating the things that I see, feel and find both physically and emotionally often discovered when out and about.Â I combine and recycle mundane and found objects, especially cloth and ephemera alongside varied art disciplines to gain greater dimension and depth.

I am interested in how the fragility of my environment resonates with my personal experiences. I am constantly surprised by the links I find between these materials and how they evoke emotions and memories for the viewer or myself.

Combining mixed media alongside found objects enables me to explore these connections and create a personal response. The colours I choose are predominantly neutral and subtle emphasizing and highlighting shape, texture and marks, the outcome frequently resulting in assemblage, sculptural and relief pieces. The challenge of bringing together different elements is often a journey on its own.

My awareness of and relationship with my surroundings is very important to both my work and to me and through these connections I seek to create and share new or renewed interpretations. I involve its previous life and history and try to recall distant memories by re-visiting forgotten times then re-connect and re-create to share in the present. I feel that by putting something into a new context I will lead the viewer to hopefully relate with it, re-evaluate and perhaps appreciate it.

The ever-changing sense of time, memory and the shifting of values fascinates me.....as a result of these small yet unique discoveries I unearth a little more of myself.
