Monika Grzymala recently said that “everything has been said already in art history… For contemporary artists it is really a challenge what we can add”. From this standpoint, Scotland’s own 2|1|4|1 Collective squarely takes aim.

This July sees its curatorial premier ‘Draw In’, an exhibition exploring the role of drawing in emerging contemporary art practice. In the context of an art scene overwhelmingly defined by the moving image and new media – at New York’s Frieze, sculpture and 3D pieces dominated the space – this exhibition will explore the transformation of the medium of drawing within the quotidian workings of early career artists today.

The exhibition will consist of works by existing 2|1|4|1 members, invited guests and a selection of artists, installed throughout three galleries and the projection room. Taking inspiration from and responding to such sources as The Fruitmarket Gallery’s 2009 exhibition “The end of the line: Attitudes in Drawing” and David Shrigley’s 2013 Turner Prize installation, 2|1|4|1 invites participants to consider the role of drawing in their own contemporary art practice.

Expect to see both site-specific installations and more intimate works, in this cross-cultural and critical examination of the expanded medium of drawing in its widest sense. Recognising that aspects of the work could be potentially challenging for some audiences, guided tours and participative workshops will be integral to the programme.

Exhibition opens with a roster including special talks, lectures and performance art, on Friday 11th July. On display in all three gallery spaces on the 3rd floor, until Sunday 27th July.
