Drawn to Fire is an exhibition of ritual fire drawing and photography that focuses on the ancient human practice of making and controlling fire; a practice that is over two million years old and one that has been essential to our survival. To be around a fire is to be connected to an intimate place where humans have always gathered to eat and share stories, songs and knowledge.Through his spontaneous and intuitive ritual fire drawings Kenneth explores the mark-making potential of light in the darkness through the balance, movement and rhythm of forms, captured using a variety of long exposure and moving camera techniques. “I like to produce work in improvised studios, out in the woods and mountains under a full moon. Setting up camp, building a fire, being still and silent is a meditative process that calms my mind and nourishes me.”“The idea that art can be made anywhere, be temporary and be captured through photography, to become another form of art is key to my practice.” “Drawn to Fire documents a sequence of experiments to produce abstract artwork through performance with a live medium that allows for a breadth of interpretation. The images are aesthetically beautiful, intriguing and just as a spark lights a fire, Kenneth’s works act as a catalyst in the imagination of the viewer.” Digby Chacksfield, Programme Manager, Babylon Gallery, Ely
