After their exciting inaugural show at the Sam Scorer Gallery in Lincoln earlier this year, earthworks get together to put a stunning show of exciting and contemporary work in ceramics. The five mature artists met while studying ceramics at Derby University. earthworks display a range of unique techniques and styles, which includes the subtle, sublime, expressive, painterly and quirky. Each artist’s work is very individual. Alan Birchall researches and creates oriental glazes which he applies to domestic ware which is then reduction-fired to stoneware. Sue Blatherwick uses coloured slips to decorate her work with designs inspired by African prints and local landscapes. Her work is raw glazed and once-fired. Carl Gray gathers wood ash which he washes and sieves to makes glazes, then fires in a wood kiln to stoneware. Mary Johnson creates domestic ware with a difference, as her work incorporates drawn and three dimensional insects. Her work is slip decorated and fired to earthenware. Jan Lewis-Eccleston creates delicate and humorous sculptural works in very fine porcelain & stoneware. Admission is free.
