From 2nd April 2015 onwards, Wilson-Eflerová’s engaging new live performances, ‘Ecclesia/Synagoga’ have been taking place at Buckland United Reformed Church in Portsmouth, Hampshire.
From 14th April 2015 audiences will be able to enjoy both the live performance works and the unique exhibition within the beautiful historic surroundings of Portsmouth Cathedral.
Audiences are invited to participate with Helena as she performs live at the venues on selected days during exhibition opening hours. Allowing for visitors to observe and slow down with her, she enables them to contemplate and test their own endurance – for a either a few minutes – or for the entire duration of her performance (six hours).
Visitors are able to engage in different ways – from passively watching Helena performing the two different characters to becoming active participants, using their own bodies to mirror her actions, including standing, sitting still, walking extremely slowly, or using their own creative skills to draw, take photographs or write poetry in response to her performances.
The ‘Anima/Animus’ installation shows the looped video with portraits of the Ecclesia and Synagoga characters (in addition to Helena’s performances live in-situ at the Cathedral on selected days). The installation is projected onto a custom built, free-standing screen.
Both the live performances and video artworks have been made in response to the medieval statues of Ecclesia and Synagoga, which are often situated either side of Cathedral and Church entrances.
‘Ecclesia/Synagoga’ has been supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
