Ahead of a planned book, this October sees a selection of Eleanor Crow’s intricate watercolours of East London shopfronts being exhibited in an actual East London shopfront – the Walthamstow Village Window Gallery.
Featuring 100 small artworks on paper, the work – through consistency of viewpoint and observational detail – shows the wealth of creativity in neighbourhood shopfronts, and the devices employed to attract customers to these small businesses that are part of the urban landscape.
Crow’s work brings a fresh new approach to topographical painting and, in addition, forms an important reportage document of some of East London’s finest small shops, some of which have closed since the project began, while many of which are still open and going strong.
Crow’s work has been featured in Étapes magazine’s East London issue, Time Out’s London blog, It’s Nice That, and in the W Project’s publication The Journey is the Treasure, featuring key female creatives, as well as proving hugely popular online on top London culture blog Spitalfields Life.
PREVIEW EVENING Friday 7 October 2016, 7-9pm. Then the exhibition will continue until Sunday 30 October.
Occupying 10m of beautiful Victorian corner-shop windows, formerly Frank Ison’s hardware store, Walthamstow Village Window Gallery is a street-facing gallery overlooking Walthamstow’s village square. The gallery is viewable entirely from the pavement and is child/dog/cycle/wheelchair friendly. Open daily during daylight hours and lit until midnight.
