Emma Jackson is our appointed Artist in Residence and will be using the Gallery as a studio and exhibiting area from July 31 to August 25. She writes: “I studied Contemporary Applied Arts at the University of Hertfordshire, where I trained in jewellery making and textiles. I specialise in hand papermaking and see paper not just as a support to be painted or drawn onto but believe it has the capacity to become a piece of artwork in its own right. I often combine paper with stitch and incorporate text and words. Themes I follow include loss, remembrance and memory; I am fascinated by the notion that a space or building can contain remnants of its previous life. I use a range of techniques such as casting with paper pulp, handmade watermarks and paper cutting. The technique I choose to use often relates to the concept of a piece of work. During my residency I will continue my papermaking practice and make work in response to the Courtyard Arts Centre and its history.”
