A public presentation and play with artist Emma Smith’s project Campanologia.Campanologia is an ongoing project to create sonic renderings of physical locations through the ancient mode of communication of church bells. Emerging from an interest in the use of bells as a call to collective action, this project has been created in collaboration with mathematicians and bell ringers for both the village of Bourn in Cambridgeshire and the city of Milan in Italy. The work is created through a process of mapping the mathematical formula to a ringing method onto the geographic space over which the sound can be heard, tracing routes and boundaries to reconstruct the physical space into a new score.Performed on church towers, the artist has also created a set of hand chimes to tonally match the bells for which the score is written.Join the artist to share in the work and try your hand at playing the compositions for yourself. The first Campanologia was commissioned by Wysing Arts Centre 2011.Campanologia Milan has been developed in collaboration with curator Stella Bottai
