This Autumn Rabley Drawing Centre is hosting an exhibition of work by British Artist, Emma Stibbon. ROMA is a considered response, one year on, to the artist’s three month residency as Derek Hill Scholar at the British School in Rome. Stibbon’s concerns are with the transformation of place, and her striking, monochrome images of Rome echo both the seductive beauty of the place and the darkness at the heart of her subject. Her themes focus on the decline and renewal of utopian planning, and how this is imprinted on the city’s street plans and buildings. Stibbon explores the layers of historical traces in the city, juxtaposing the architectural constructs of Mussolini with ruins from the Roman Empire. Large works include Colosseo, a powerful ink drawing of the Colosseum and the darkly atmospheric, Aqueduct, Rome, a technically complex, large woodcut on Japanese paper. Both works reveal the dramatic theatricality of Stibbon’s work. The ephemeral nature of chalk on blackboard, her choice of medium and support for some of her small drawings, signals Stibbon’s interest in the fragility and instability of the political structures which are still inherent in Rome today.
