England’s Favourite Landscape features paintings with a strong element of the real and experienced landscape mixed with references to historic and contemporary English landscape ideologies, design and use. The views presented however, are imaginary and began life as miniature model landscapes, which were then photographed for the process of painting. Collinson’s technique removes any Romantic or ‘traditional’ connotations usually associated with landscape painting. Instead the subject matter is the photographic print itself and the works demonstrate painting in a photo-real manner. Juxtaposing neo-classical fragments with billboards, abandoned cars, graffiti and rubbish in his model landscapes, combined with his remarkable techniques ensures that Collinson’s work expertly captures contemporary society’s quest for both nostalgia and modernity.
