Dartmoor based artists, Stephen Park and Sarah Hoskins, will be exhibiting recent paintings and drawings on paper at the Ashburton contemporary art venue, artspace@57. Stephen Park, has been described as “the YBA that got away” because of his participation in ‘Freeze’ in 1989. He works in black gouache on paper. At first glance these drawings resemble gestural abstract paintings, but quickly reveal themselves to be dense with latent imagery and detail. Sarah Hoskins’ work is abstract, colourful, and often intricate. “My process is like a game with limited moves where the components assert their identities. My satisfaction comes from finding relationships that create a whole”. These artists have much in common, but there are also many ways in which their work diverges. Park’s work reveals an interest in structure and order, whereas Hoskins’ work pursues further the qualities of chance and accident. Artists’ talk: Saturday 5th of July 12pm.
