Experience a travelling ‘miniature universe’ through an exhibition of contemporary Japanese design and a series of Japanese tea ceremonies. Originally exhibited in Sapporo, Japan and then New York, the Folding Cosmos journey now continues to the UK to collaborate with Bath based visual artist Paula Tew.Folding Cosmos is the concept of a touring Japanese tea house which takes inspiration from the Japanese explorer Takeshiro Matsuura’s One Mat Room, built as a tranquil setting to reflect upon a life of travels and shared experiences, as well as the traditional Japanese tea ceremony which treasures every meeting as a once in a lifetime experience. The exhibition is a contemporary interpretation of the two themes, created by seven furniture designers, artists and ceramicists. Paula Tew’s contribution of textile and book art pieces adds a further element to the exhibition focusing on symbolism within traditional Japanese design motifs. The exhibition includes a series of tea ceremonies as an insight into Japanese culture as well as an opportunity to create origami pieces and messages to contribute to a peace installation.Tea ceremony spaces are limited so booking is recommended; for tea ceremony times and booking details please visit the events page on our website.Opening night 6-9pm Friday 27 April 2012.
